Self Checkout POS System - The Visible And Hidden Parts Of A Clever Self Checkout Point Of Sale

Are you considering replacing expensive human checkers with a self checkout POS system at the point of sale in your business? In retail business such as grocery shops, where margins are slim, a proper self checkout system can both improve speed of checkout and customer satisfaction and loyalty, as well as provide instant cost savings.

Pos Touch Monitor

In this short article we will go over three visible and one hidden components of a self checkout point of sale system that provide satisfying customer experience and reduce theft and shrinkage. The components are: Touchscreen monitor, Barcode scanners, Payment processor, and finally, the Item scale. Let's see what to look for in each of these self checkout POS system components to assure quick yet satisfying customer experience and minimize shrinkage.

Pos Touch Monitor

Touchscreen monitor

On one hand, the touchscreen monitor is an input device, were a clearly positioned, large option buttons guide the customer by providing options through the checkout process, from the greeting and starting of the checkout, through scanning of the items, placing them in bags, and controlling the payment processor.

The visual appearance of the screens must be simple to navigate, both for the customer and the staff. In addition, the on screen messages should be accentuated by the human voice from the system, pointing the customer's attention to the next task, or to the proper place on the touch screen where they need to proceed.

Barcode scanners

The barcode scanners should be the best available. Nothing is more frustrating for the customer than repeated unsuccessful scans. To allow scanning at a larger distance, the self checkout must include built-in laser scanners, and not the short-range optical scanners. If larger items need to be scanned, such as in home improvement stores, a separate wired optical scanner can be offered.

Payment processor

You will likely not find a system with the payment processor integrated into the touchscreen monitor so the payment processor that accepts credit and debit cards and charges them appropriately will need to be separate. This is a bad design from the customer's perspective. Shifting focus and "modus operandi" from touchscreen, and finger operation to the payment processor pad, and electronic pen operation, and back, requires a long learning curve on the part of the customer. If you can find an integrated system, you should strongly consider it.

Hidden component: the item scale

The invisible, unadvertized component that any self checkout system should include is the item scale. The scale makes sure that the items are moved from the shopping bag, through the scanning area, and into the bag. When the item scale detects that the item is not placed into the bagging area, it should point out to the customer that the item has been misplaced. Overall, the item scale gives an impression of a highly secured system and is a great theft deterrent.
